Chief Motor Machinist Mate

My uncle, Chief Motor Machinist Mate Joseph Jackson Stokes, USNR, of Elizabeth City, NC served in USS Thomas Jefferson during WWII. He participated in the November 1942 invasion of North Africa at French Morocco near Casablanca and the landings at Salerno and Naples in Sicily and Italy as well as the D-Day invasion at Normandy and the following
invasion of Southern France. He was awarded the Silver Star for actions in combat.

After VE-Day he participated in the Pacific Theater operations of the USS Thomas Jefferson and remained aboard until the end of the war.
